Art better than Advertising?
This is a piece by Ji Lee - who covered a billboard with his own artwork as part of an art movement called New York Street Advertising Takeover in which 126 billboards all over the city were white washed down by volunteers and then redesigned by artists.
All of the billboards that were used in this were illegally placed by advertisers (as in they had no prior permission) so part of the movement was to take these advertising spaces back by the public and replaced with artwork.
I really like this whole project and the design by Ji Lee. It's something that's quite relevant to the work I'm doing with my large scale poster. I might look into 'illegal advertising' as a way in which to use the space for my artwork and poster.
