Plymouth City Council

Graffiti and Fly Poster policy

A small article created by the Plymouth City Council on their policy on graffiti and fly posters. I think my parcel tags could count as fly posters, although maybe the loophole of them not being posters may be a possibility for me to get away with these guerilla advertising campaign. Due to the short time scale of the project, I haven't been able to fully research the laws that are relevant to what I'm doing as part of this project, but I'm hoping winging it and being able to run fast if necessary will be an advantage for me!

Art better than Advertising?

This is a piece by Ji Lee - who covered a billboard with his own artwork as part of an art movement called New York Street Advertising Takeover in which 126 billboards all over the city were white washed down by volunteers and then redesigned by artists.

All of the billboards that were used in this were illegally placed by advertisers (as in they had no prior permission) so part of the movement was to take these advertising spaces back by the public and replaced with artwork.

I really like this whole project and the design by Ji Lee. It's something that's quite relevant to the work I'm doing with my large scale poster. I might look into 'illegal advertising' as a way in which to use the space for my artwork and poster.

Keri Smith - Guerrilla Artist

How to be a Guerrilla Artist

Keri Smith is an artist based in Vancouver, Canada. She's published numerous books that inspire artist, designers, illustrators etc to embrace their mistakes and the messier side of art to expand themselves as creative types. She inspires you to embrace the world around you, looking beyond what you see and using your artistic talent to make an impact. She's very concious of environmental issues and highlights a number of these in her book 'The Guerrilla Art Kit', and that's another aspect of her work that I admire and will be an inspiration to me for this project.

Cheap/Unique Guerilla Art

LED Throwies

LED throwies were a concept created by Graffiti Research Lab - an international collaboration of guerilla artists. They work together at creating new and innovative ways to create art in public areas. I was really inspired by the LED throwies as a really creative and clever way to not only advertise something, but also as a way to brighten up general surroundings - no pun intended.

Laser Tagging

Another creation by the Graffiti Research Lab is laser tagging. It involves using a highly powerful projector and custom software to project and create temporary designs on canvases of buildings, walls and any other flat urban surroundings. This is a great way to get noticed, however, slightly more expensive than any other guerilla methods I've noted, since the projector is worth a lot of money and also a powerful expensive laser is needed for this to work too.

Looptaggr.

Looptaggr was a project created by Ariel Schlesinger & Aram Bartholl. Together, they created a simple and dirt cheap way to stencil and spray designs on a loop. This allows for spraying tags whilst moving (as the video shows) but is also a great way to repeat your design in certain areas, without applying stencils over and over again. This is a great example of a cost effective way to create guerilla art.

Anti-advertising pop up stickers

"CLOSING THE WINDOW ON REAL LIFE POP-UPS On the Internet, getting rid of unsollicited pop-ups is pretty easy. In real life, things are a tad more complicated. ThePop_Down Project aims at symbolically restoring everyone's right to non-exposure: Just stick a "Close window" button on any public spacepollution."

Note: you can download these stickers off the Pop_Down project blog. Might have to do this myself anyway!

Guerrilla Marketing Links

Guerrilla Marketing - Wikipedia

The wikipedia article on guerilla marketing basically outlines the 'rules' and ideals behind the guerrilla movement. The term was coined by Jay Conrad Levinson and was an advertising outlet for entrepreneurs and small businesses to creatively exhibit their companies and skills without a massive marketing budget.

Seven Free or Dirt Cheap Guerrilla Marketing Secrets

This is a great article that outlines simple and easy ways that you can advertise your company and business. Some of the ideas presented are quite obvious but what's good about this link is that it really encourages you to look for the cheaper options. The beauty of guerrilla marketing is that it can be really cost effective for smaller businesses looking for new clients.

10 Guerrilla Marketing Tactics for Designers

This is a helpful article since it's specfically focused on designers, and the ways in which they can advertise their creative services. All of the featured ideas are really cheap if not free, which shows how easy it can be to create hype over your design company with only a few of these in place.

Guerrilla Advertising - Creative Attention Seeking

A collection of 8 different articles, archiving various methods and guerrilla advertising stunts created all over the world by a number of companies, big and small, well known and just starting out. This is a great inspiration towards my project, but a little worrying since all these guerrilla examples seem to include a big budget - something that I don't have. It's also a little annoying that all these examples feature this common feature, since guerrilla marketing was originally created as a cost effective, cheap or free way to advertise.
